Q: You’ve had an unusual path to yachting. Can you tell us about the journey that led you to become a captain?
A: My path to being a super yacht captain is like no other – I actually grew up landlocked on a small farm in central Indiana, so the farthest thing from yachting. I went to graduate school on the eastern seaboard of North Carolina and became a chemistry professor before I was a super yacht captain. Ironically, it was a student of mine who introduced me to the yachting industry by inviting me to a party on a boat, and once I stepped one foot onto it, I knew this was what I wanted to do.
Q: You are a captain of three large vessels docked at our Town of Palm Beach Marina, can you tell us about this the perks of being based here?
A: I absolutely love being based out of the Town of Palm Beach Marina! Honestly, I thought it was a brand-new facility [note, it was renovated and reopened in 2021]. It’s awesome the way the docks are built and the service, including Marina Manager Mike and Dockmaster Keith, is just amazing. While there is much to be excited about, it’s all about the service for me.
Q: What amenities or services at Palm Beach Marina do you find most beneficial for both the crew and the guests aboard various-sized vessels?
A: When it comes to amenities, the Marina is so centrally located to everything – it’s just steps away the famous Worth Avenue, and just over the bridge is the amazing Clematis Street. With access to the Mandel Rec Center, the Par 3 golf course, and numerous tennis courts, my crew and guests can easily get off the boat and stay active. From health and wellness to entertainment, everything is right here!
Q: In your experience, what distinguishes Palm Beach Marina from other marinas you have visited or operated from?
A: From my perspective as a captain, the first thing that stands out is the extra width of the slips. You don’t feel cramped while maneuvering between the neighboring boat and the dock. Another thing, the pump-out services available right at the slips are truly fantastic—it adds a level of convenience that you don't find everywhere.
Q: What is it like being a female captain in a male-dominated field?
A: I often get asked what it's like being a female captain in a male-dominated industry, and to be honest with you, I think it all comes down to mindset. Coming from a background in farming, welding, and transitioning from science to a yacht captain, I've learned not to pay any mind to it. In fact, I think it’s all about the way that you approach them. These men bring a wealth of knowledge, and by showing them the respect they deserve, they have become my biggest cheerleaders, assets, and resources. Being a female in this industry has been nothing short of amazing; I've been very well-received and very well-supported.
Q: Can you share any advice for women looking to join the yachting industry?
A: When it comes to other women looking to enter the industry, I say you have to do it. I've made some of the best friends and long-lasting relationships and visited some of the most amazing places. It has changed my life.
Q: Because you often encounter owners with demanding schedules, chartered guests and crews of all ages and nationalities, yacht captains need to be_______?
A: One of the most valuable traits of a yacht captain is being vulnerable. We’re not just captains; we’re boat handlers, navigators, and people who understand the weather. At the end of the day, as captains, we are leaders, and we are leaders of a team. It is so important to be vulnerable and be your true, genuine, authentic self.
