We are sailing into the busy season in Palm Beach with several upcoming boat shows nearby as the Town gears up for fun, fashion and frolics – including the iconic Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) in October. Our state-of-the-art Marina, a short 52 miles from FLIBS, is the perfect place to dock and enjoy the island like a native. We all know that Florida is the boating capital of the world, boasting more registered vessels than any other state, so let’s navigate these waters with style and panache. With so many boat enthusiasts visiting, it’s the ideal time to brush up on your boating etiquette during your stay at the Town of Palm Beach Marina. Be sure to check out a full list of upcoming South Florida boat shows below.
Palm Beach Marina Boating Etiquette Musts:
Talk the Talk Before You Dock
Before arriving, communicate clearly with your crew and the dock attendants about where you plan to tie up your boat. Specify which side of the finger pier you’ll be using (port or starboard) to avoid any confusion. If you have any special requirements, such as needing assistance with lines or fenders, let the staff know in advance.
Watt’s the Current Situation?
Inform the vessel operator of the location of electrical hookups on the dock so they can prepare accordingly. Communicate the estimated time of arrival, particularly if you're planning to dock during slack tide, which is the best time for smooth entry and exit. This is crucial for a hassle-free docking experience.
Steady Does It
When approaching the dock and entering the slip, keep it slow and steady. Remember: the only thing that should be dancing is the water.
Signals and Safety: Don’t Be a Floaty Communicator
Ensure that your crew communicates clearly with dock attendants who are handling the lines. Specify exactly where you want the lines placed—this helps everyone involved understand the plan and reduces the risk of miscommunication. Use hand signals or verbal cues to clarify instructions as you approach the dock.
Keep It Shipshape & Clean
Nothing makes you feel like you’re sailing on a floating landfill quite like an unkempt boat. Do your fellow boaters a solid and keep your space tidy. When in port, be sure to toss your trash in the bin and not the briny deep. The Palm Beach Marina is a member of the Clean Marina Program, through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Be a Good Neighbor: Respect The Bubble
While boating, you're bound to encounter other boaters, whether anchored near them or passing by them on the water. Be respectful of other boaters' space and give them the same courtesy you would want. Don't play your music too loudly, so everyone can enjoy their own mood and yacht-astic ambience.
No Wake, No Problem!
We all love a good splash, but there’s a time and place for everything. When cruising near the Palm Beach Marina, remember to follow the no-wake zone rules.
Dress to Impress (or at Least to Not Distress)
While it’s essential to feel comfortable on your boat, remember to keep it classy. Palm Beach’s style is very chic and fashionable. Plus, check out our Marina-branded apparel, including caps, belts, tees, polos and more for some great ideas and takeaways from your visit.
